What is Rhinoplasty

Surgery that changes the shape of the nose and, when needed, how it works.

In short

Rhinoplasty is an operation on the bone and cartilage of the nose. It can make the nose smaller or larger, lower a hump on the bridge, change the tip, or straighten a nose that is crooked.

The outside of the nose and the airway inside it are connected. A change to one can affect the other, so the shape and the breathing are planned together.

Two goals

Shape

The bridge, the tip, the nostrils and the angle between the nose and the upper lip. The plan depends on the skin, the bone and cartilage underneath, and the rest of the face.

Breathing

A deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or a weak nasal valve can block airflow. These are corrected in the same operation when they are present.

The operation

In the Operating Room

Rhinoplasty is performed in a partner hospital in Istanbul, under general anaesthesia. Most patients go home, or to the hotel, the next day.

Operating Room

Who it is for

  • Adults whose nose has finished growing, usually from the age of 17 or 18
  • People who want to change a specific feature of their nose
  • People with breathing problems caused by the structure of the nose
  • People who had nose surgery before and want a correction
  • People in good general health who can stop smoking before and after surgery

What it cannot do

  • It cannot copy another person’s nose. The result depends on your own skin and structure.
  • Thick skin limits how much detail shows at the tip.
  • Swelling takes months to settle. The final shape is seen after about a year.
  • It does not treat allergies or sinus disease, although these can be assessed at the same visit.

Questions

Common Questions

In open rhinoplasty a small cut is made on the skin between the nostrils, so the cartilage can be seen directly. In closed rhinoplasty all cuts are inside the nose. The choice depends on what needs to change, especially at the tip.

Yes. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia in a hospital, and most patients stay one night.

Usually seven to ten days, until the splint is removed. Revision surgery may need a longer stay. The treatment pages list the figures for each operation.

The nose is visible when the splint comes off, but it is still swollen. Most of the swelling goes down in the first months. The tip takes the longest, up to a year or more with thick skin.

Yes. Septum and turbinate surgery can be combined with rhinoplasty. This is called septorhinoplasty.
