Septoplasty or rhinoplasty: which one do you need?

By Op. Dr. Kemal Caner Delioğlu 7 min read

Clinical nasal examination during a consultation

Septoplasty treats a problem inside the nose, while rhinoplasty reshapes the outside and may also improve airflow. The right choice depends on examination, symptoms and goals.

In short

Septoplasty mainly corrects the internal septum to improve breathing. Rhinoplasty changes the nasal framework and appearance, and can include functional work. When both the septum and external framework contribute to obstruction, a combined septorhinoplasty may be discussed.

  • Internal septum and external framework are assessed separately.
  • Aesthetic and breathing goals can overlap.
  • The operation follows the anatomy, not the name requested.
  • A consultation and nasal examination are needed before choosing.
  • Recovery and risks depend on the work performed.

What does septoplasty treat?

Septoplasty treats a displaced or curved nasal septum when it contributes to blocked breathing. The surgeon works inside the nose to improve the passage while preserving enough support for the nasal framework.

The assessment begins with symptoms, previous injuries or surgery, allergies and examination. Nasal endoscopy may be useful when the obstruction is not visible from the front. Turbinate enlargement or valve narrowing can also influence breathing, so correcting the septum alone is not always the whole plan.

When is rhinoplasty the relevant operation?

Rhinoplasty is relevant when the external shape or framework needs to be changed, whether for appearance, function or both. It can address a dorsal hump, a crooked nasal line, tip shape or structural narrowing.

A person can have a cosmetic concern without a breathing complaint, or breathing difficulty with an external deformity. The plan should describe which structures will change and why. Review the primary rhinoplasty treatment page and prepare questions for the surgeon consultation.

Do you need both operations?

Septorhinoplasty combines internal septal correction with external reshaping when both areas affect the goal. For example, a deviated septum may be accompanied by a crooked nasal bone or a narrowed nasal valve.

The combined approach is not automatically more appropriate. Examination, photographs, airflow complaints and the stability of the framework guide the decision. A functional concern should be documented separately from an appearance preference so that expectations remain clear.

How is the decision made?

The decision is made after a medical history and examination, not from a photograph alone. Tell the surgeon whether the blockage is one-sided, constant, worse during exercise or associated with allergy, dryness, nosebleeds or previous trauma.

Ask which structure causes the symptom, what the operation will change, and what may remain afterward. The discussion should include bleeding, infection, altered sensation, persistent obstruction and the possibility that healing changes the final shape. You can request an online nasal analysis before an in-person visit.

What does recovery look like?

Early congestion is common after nasal surgery and does not show the final breathing result. Swelling settles gradually, while the timing varies with the operation, skin, bone work and healing response.

Follow the specific instructions about cleaning, exertion, sleeping position and appointments. Contact the clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, fever, worsening pain or a sudden change in vision. The septorhinoplasty treatment page explains how combined planning differs from an isolated septoplasty.

Frequently asked questions

Can septoplasty change the shape of my nose?

Its primary purpose is internal breathing improvement. If the external framework also needs correction, a septorhinoplasty may be discussed rather than an isolated septoplasty.

Can rhinoplasty improve breathing?

It can when the plan includes functional correction of structures that narrow the airway. This requires examination and should be stated as part of the surgical plan.

Is a deviated septum always operated on?

No. Symptoms, examination findings and how much the problem affects daily life matter. A deviation without meaningful symptoms may not need surgery.

How long should I wait before judging breathing?

Nasal swelling can make breathing feel blocked early in recovery. The clinic gives individual review timing because healing differs between patients.
